REVIEW
In my experience of the last year or two The Pit is an excellent well-rounded dojo where I practice Japanese Ju Jitsu and Kobu (weapons) arts where striking, take downs and groundwork is mixed in with weapons (knife, short stick sword, katana and jo) and physical conditioning.
While modern BJJ specializes in fighting other practitioners of the same art, JJJ is the root art of aikido and judo originating in samurai combat and taught at the dojo for self defence. An increased focus on empty hands striking occurred after the abolishment of the samurai class.
This particular dojo does excellent work preserving the original art as handed down to our Grand Master Nick Donato who he himself has a deep and varied understanding of the arts.
As with most Japanese dojos and arts, the hierarchy, ritual and naming conventions are very prescriptive, something I personally struggle with.
The training is a mix of drills, kata, sparring and conditioning, with emphasis placed in that order. Training is done in a way that is as safe as possible and sustainable long term.
